Goals:
Our goal is to help individuals and families cope with everyday stressors and deal with the conflicts which interfere in attaining life goals. We want to help people successfully change behaviors that are not working. Therapy can help identify problem areas that may not have been recognized before but which may actually be the key to wellness.
You will play an active role in your treatment, including working with your therapist to define your treatment goals and assess your progress. We believe people can recover from challenges and/or traumatic experiences. We believe that our clients deserve to be treated with the highest quality personal attention and respect.
At Desert View, we have thirteen full and part time therapists with vast experience in many areas. We are counselors and therapists, not medical doctors. We are each licensed by the State of Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners.

Why Counseling?
We live in a society looking for quick, easy, painless remedies for our problems. The field of mental health is no different. There are television advertisements for pills to treat many types of emotional difficulties. While we have made great strides in the medical treatment of emotional and behavioral difficulties, counseling still proves to be a necessary component of well-being. Research indicates that a combination of therapy and medication is the most beneficial treatment for depression, anxiety, the effects of trauma and abuse as well as other related issues. Whether you come in alone or with a partner or family, counseling helps you say your feelings out loud, express your needs and ask for help from those around you. You can identify behavioral, emotional or psychiatric symptoms and develop the plans and skills to treat or cope with those symptoms. Here are some of the symptoms we frequently hear our clients describe:
depression is described as:
- feeling persistently sad
- feeling no pleasure in activities that were once enjoyable
- experiencing sleep problems, loss of appetite, inability to concentrate, memory problems, and physical ailments
- persons with depression may feel worthless, helpless, and hopeless about their ability to get well. No matter how hard they try to “snap out of it”, they feel as though they are falling into an abyss of despair.
When people suffering from anxiety disorders talk about their symptoms, they often include these words:
- unrealistic or excessive worry
- unrealistic fears concerning objects or situations
- sleep disturbance, shakiness, sweating, cold/clammy hands
- jitteriness, racing or pounding heart
- rapid pulse and/or breathing
- confused or excessive thoughts
Children with exceptional challenges are often described as:
- not listening, lazy, angry or rageful . They might be in trouble at school, won’t do chores or follow instructions, daydream, never sit still, are mean, sullen or disrespectful. Children also suffer anxiety and worry excessively when there seems to be no reason.
Hidden communication problems as well as conflicting values may create tension and stress for couples and families. Several of the therapists at Desert View Counseling are trained to help families and couples identify and change the patterns that lead to anger, depression, and unhappiness.
No one symptom alone can describe a mental health problem. It is the combination of these symptoms, which leads people to feel overwhelmed and seek help. Counseling at Desert View starts with helping define symptoms and feelings, identify difficult life situations, plan treatment goals, develop tools and strategies to cope with the symptoms and find ways to maintain a healthier life.

How to Choose a Therapist
There are a number of considerations in choosing a therapist for yourself or your family. We offer this information to give you some ideas in searching for the best therapist for your needs.
Is the therapist independently licensed?
One of the first things to know is if your therapist is independently licensed in Arizona. A license insures the person has met Arizona’s requirements to be a therapist. The license requirements are in place so the public is protected from individuals advertising themselves as a therapist when they do not have the necessary experience and education.
What type of therapist do you want?
Counselor masters degree LPC (licensed professional counselor) - A Licensed Professional counselor is trained in applying the principles of psychotherapy, human development, learning theory, group dynamics, and the etiology of mental illness and dysfunctional behavior to individuals, couples, families, and groups, for the purposes of treating psychopathology and promoting optimal mental health.
Clinical social worker Masters degree in Social Work LCSW (licensed clinical social worker) A clinical social worker is trained in psychotherapy and helps individuals deal with a variety of mental health and daily living problems to improve overall functioning by helping the client explore all the systems in their lives which have impacted them and seek solutions to emotional and behavioral struggles.
Marriage and Family Counselor Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy LMFT (licensed marriage and family counselor) - Marriage and family therapy is applying psychotherapeutic and marital or family systems theories and techniques in the assessment and treatment of mental health and daily living problems as particularly relate to couples or families but also appropriate to an individual’s issues when they struggle to achieve a healthier life.
Substance Abuse Counselor master’s degree - LISAC (licensed independent substance abuse counselor) - Substance abuse counselors help people who have problems with alcohol, drugs, gambling, and other addictions. They help individuals identify behaviors and problems related to their addiction. These counselors work with individuals, families, and groups. All of the above counselors are licensed by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Licensing and information can be located at this website www.bbhe.state.az.us.
Would you like your therapist to have a particular specialty?
A very important topic to consider when choosing a therapist is the therapist’s particular specialty. For example, are you looking for help with relationships, depression, anxiety or problems at work. Do you need a therapist with experience in childhood disorders or problems (not all counselors work with children or adolescents)? Is the issue for therapy related to ongoing serious mental illness, gay/lesbian issues, family or divorce.Ask the therapist’s office staff when you call for an appointment with a therapists who can meet your needs. Your insurance company can also give you specialty information.
Other questions to consider: is convenience of location important to you, what time of day and/or day of the week do you need? Desert View Counseling offers appointments Monday through Saturday, evenings included. After you meet the therapist you should feel as though your needs have been heard and have a sense of confidence that this person can help you.
We at DVCC hope you have found this information helpful in your quest to find a therapist that is right for you.
